Conservation International found the highest fish biodiversity of any reef on the planet in these waters. The 3km-deep Wetar Strait out front is the Cetacean Highway: dolphins year-round, with migratory pygmy blue whales in October and November.

The bar is coming next. Our new deck faces the bay and is planned for the November–December season — cold Bintang, cocktails, fresh coconuts and sunset over the strait.

When to come
Atauro is year-round. What you'll do depends on the month.
March – October
Dry season. Sunny every day, hot. Best for ridge hikes up Mount Manucoco, village tours, and long days on the water.
October – November
Whale season. Dolphins, orca, and migratory pygmy blue whales cross the Wetar Strait. Spaces fill quickly — book early.
December – February
Wet season. Humidity up, winds drop. Glass-flat seas and the best visibility of the year — prime diving and snorkelling.
Island festivals
July — the Betel Nut Festival at Makadade. June — the Boat Festival at Makili village. Both on Atauro, both worth planning around.
Getting to Atauro — we'll sort it
Atauro sits about 25 km north of Dili, across the deep Wetar Strait. Every package includes your boat ticket and pickup at the pier — you don't queue, you don't haggle, you don't worry. Tell us your arrival day and we'll book the right crossing for your group.
Local ferry (Nakroma and Sucess): every day except Mondays from Dili port, about 3 hours. Cheap, slow, beautiful.
MAF flight: light aircraft from Dili every Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
Private charter: we can arrange a speedboat — best if your dates don't line up with the public schedule, or you're a group of six or more.
Travelling in whale season (Oct–Nov)? Book early — boats fill fast and the best dates are spoken for months ahead.

Atauro is 25km north of Dili. The local ferries (Nakroma and Sucess) sail from Dili port every day except Mondays and take about 3 hours; MAF flies light aircraft on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays; or we can arrange a private speedboat charter. Every package includes the boat ticket and pickup at the pier, and we're only a hundred metres from where the ferry docks at Beloi.
With us. We have a backpackers hostel sleeping up to six at $18 per person, and three private rooms from $35 — two with a double and a single bed and their own shower and toilet, and one double with a shared bathroom. All of it a hundred metres from Atauro port in Beloi. Dive, snorkel and hiking packages including accommodation can be arranged on request.
No. We run fun dives for certified divers across more than twenty sites, and we also teach — introduction dives for complete beginners, Open Water Diver, and on to Divemaster. For snorkelling, whale tours, hiking and cultural tours no certification is needed at all, and if you've never snorkelled before the Beloi reef is a soft place to start.
Year-round, depending on what you want to do. March–October is dry season — best for hiking, village tours and long days on the water. October–November is whale season. December–February brings glass-flat seas and the year's best diving and snorkelling visibility.

Return ferry tickets from Dili, the activities you've booked, gear, guides and marine park fees, and pickup at the pier. Accommodation with us can be bundled in. We bundle, you arrive.
For whale season (October–November), as far ahead as you can — spaces fill quickly. For everything else, a few weeks for the activities you want, and as little as 48 hours' notice if your dates are flexible.
Our homemade ice cream is open now — coconut, rum & raisin, chocolate, vanilla and strawberry. The deck bar facing the bay is under construction and opens in the November–December season, with cold Bintang, cocktails and fresh coconuts. There's also a souvenir shop on site.
